Cub Scouts Blue & Gold Banquet Theme Ideas

GENERAL ITEMS

When we hold our Blue & Gold:  February each year

Who we invited:  We invited all boys that were turning 8 in that current year, the cub scout, parent's, primary presidency, bishopric and Stake Primary Presidency.  This was the only pack meeting in the year that we only invited the cub scouts and not the families.  Last year they invited the families and it was also fun.

Pictures:  We would ask each of the leaders to take pictures of the boys throughout the year and we would have one of the committee take pictures at every pack meeting.

The Blue and Gold is where we would use the pictures.  Here are the things we would do with the pictures:
* We would print some of the pictures of each of the boys throughout the year and incorporate them with the decorations
*  We would put together a video of the year to show at the Blue & Gold - The video would go through Den Meetings, Pack Meetings, Day Camps and then at the end we would show individual pictures of each of the boys by each den (there would be a section for the incoming boys and we would get pictures from the parents)
*  We would burn a copy of the DVD for each of the families to give them at the Blue & Gold

Gift for each boy:  With each theme we would give each of the boys a small gift that went along with the theme

Recognition / Awards:  Obviously, throughout the entire year we would focus on helping the boys earn things, but we put a huge focus on making sure every boy earned something at the Blue & Gold.  Rank Advancement, Religious Knot, Belt Loops, etc.  We also do a certificate / small gift or treat for all of the leaders.

General Decoration Idea:  Blocks of wood painted different colors with holes drilled in them.  You can purchase balloon sticks and plastic holders to hold the balloons and put them in the blocks of wood.  If the color of the block doesn't work you can wrap the block of wood with tissue or fabric to make it look fancier and still put the balloons in the blocks of wood.  This is a very versatile decoration idea.

WESTERN THEME

Invitation:  Pocket Knife (attached is a copy of the image that I got the idea from)
I created my own pattern in publisher in the same shapes where I could type all of the information on the sheet, printed them on card stock, cut them out and had the boys use the brads to put them together.

Decorations:
See pictures, but here are some of the details:
Christmas Trees with pictures of the boys throughout the year as the decorations
Wood Horse with Saddles
Made Rocks out of Boxes
Fake Fire in the middle of the trees
Wanted Posters of each of the boys hanging on the wall

Table Decorations:
Checkered Placemats
Cub Scout Rocks for each boy
Napkin folded out for the center of the table
Lanterns / Lightbulb candles

Food:
Banner that said Chuckwagon
We served the food in pie tins
Soups
Jello Brains - just for that fun surprise for the boys (leaders weren't as excited about it :)
Cornbread

Program / Activities:
Bishopric dressed up as a country group and lip synced
Member of ward plays the saw (boys thought this was awesome)
Lassoing
Candy Guess jars as they arrived (a way to add a little curve to the guessing is put a can of soda in the middle of the candy)

Gift for each boy:
Little cowboy hats with treats in a cellophane bag

CIRCUS THEME / CARNIVAL THEME

Invitation:  Circus tent with spin the arrow for the information (see picture)
Printed everything on white card stock and had the boys color in the squares and attach the arrows with a brad in the middle

Decorations:
See pictures, but here are some of the details
Canopy
Carnival banners
Streamers from basketball hoops
Created a ring in the middle for the boys to stand with construction paper folded in half and overlapping a little as we created the circle

Food:
Nachos
Hot Dogs
Pizza
Cotton Candy
Popcorn

Program / Activities:
The program part was recognizing the boys - with rank advancements the parent's painted the boys faces as clowns
The activities were as the cub scouts arrived - bullseye, ring toss, bean bag toss, carnival games

Gift for boys:
Beach Balls
Party Blower
Treats

One of our cub scouts makes Balloon Characters so he made balloon hats ahead of time that people were able to get as they arrived to wear throughout the evening.

Gave the awards in a Party Hat

BIRTHDAY THEME

Invitation:  Birthday Cards
Cut construction paper in half
Had stickers, pictures, etc. for the boys to decorate the front of the cards
Typed up the information to put in the middle and the boys cut it out and glued it in the middle of the cards

The other idea we had for invitations is blowing up balloons and putting the invitation on the balloons (you could roll it up and put it inside and the balloon popped to get the invite out)

Decorations:
See pictures, but here are some of the details
Big Box Birthday Cake that the cub master jumped out of to start the party
This was to celebrate the 100 years of scouts so the center pieces were 100's cut out of wood with holes in the top to put sticks with the balloons
Balloons are always great for a birthday party
Wrapped tissue rolls and made them look like candles

Food:
Make your own pizzas:
  * English Muffins
  * Pizza Sauce
  * Shredded Cheese
  * Pineapple, Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Bacon, Olives
Vegetable Trays
Jello Salad

HOBO THEME

Invitation:  Stick with invite on the end, like a hobo pack

I can't find pictures of this activity (if I find them I will update this one)
Brought in some picnic tables
Blankets on the ground for people to sit on and eat
Made it look like outside with plants, fake rocks
Created one of the tables to look like a train car

Food:
Everyone brought a can of food and it was dumped in a pot and made like a soup - I wasn't very excited about the idea, but it turned out really good
Corn Bread

Program:
Race to have the boys wrap up their dads with tissue paper
Dress up as hobo's

Gift to the boys:  Stick with a hobo pack (cut fabric in squares and tied it up) attached with items for the boys inside (can't remember exactly what we put in the hobo packs)

KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE

Invitations:  Sword
Cut sword out of card stock with the information on the sword
Knight Shield covered in aluminum foil with the invitation glued on it
Crumpled up brown paper bag with sticks on the top and the bottom - roll out like a scroll as the invitation (this is the one we did)

Decorations:
See pictures, but here are some of the details
The brick walls were just empty boxes that were spray painted gray with black lines
Cut out the Shields with the Cub Scout moto, etc. printed in the middle with pictures throughout the year on them
Gray tarp under the boxes
Green trees around the room
Boy Shields hanging on the wall - picture of the boy in the middle and then we had them make their own of things that mean the most to them - things they like (Their Armor)
Preparation of the shields for a Den Meeting:  Cut them out of cardboard boxes, spray painted them silver and then the boys were able to glue pictures or draw pictures with sharpies
Entry way we took long, black tablecloths and draped them down and tied back with red ribbon

Table decorations:
Black tableclothes
The blue / red strips down the middle are long plastic tablecloths cut in strips
Chess / Checker games as the center pieces - purchased at the Dollar Store (gave as prizes at the end)
Baskets with bread
Black placemats
Gold coins sprinkled around on the table

Food:
Meatballs w/ BBQ Sauce - poke with little sword toothpicks
Little Smokies - poke with little sword toothpicks
Vegetable Trays

Program / Activities:
My son made origami knight hats for the boys as they arrive (made out of butcher paper)
In the corner they were able to hold a sword and get their pictures taken
The round circular boards are round on the top and rounded on the bottom to rock around - made swords out of pipe and pool noodles and they had sword wars
Chess / Checker games on the table

Gift for the boys:
Knighted each of them with the inflatable swords

At the end of the evening we had them "Slay the Dragon" pinata

SUPER HERO THEME

I got this idea from a friend and didn't attend their event, but some of the ideas she shared are:
Decorate as Super Hero Theme (can be the Pixar, Disney or Super Man type heroes)
Make Super Hero capes for each of the cub scouts
Tie in the Super Hero theme with each of the boys being a Super Hero Scout

I will try to get more of the details and put them on here
